Stone Boathouse Conversion into Vacation Home

This project concerns the restoration and adaptive reuse of an old, abandoned stone boathouse located directly by the sea. Originally a utilitarian structure, the building was reimagined as a compact vacation home that preserves its historic shell while accommodating contemporary living within a limited footprint.

Given the small ground-level area, the design strategy focused on the intelligent use of vertical space. Two mezzanine levels were introduced to maximise functionality without compromising spatial clarity. The primary mezzanine, positioned above the living area, accommodates the main bedroom, maintaining visual connection with the double-height space below. A secondary mezzanine above the bathroom provides a flexible area that can function either as a compact office or as an additional guest sleeping space.

The interior design was intentionally restrained, employing a minimal colour and material palette that complements the existing stone envelope. Natural textures and neutral tones were selected to enhance light and atmosphere while allowing the uninterrupted sea view to remain the dominant feature. The project transforms a neglected coastal structure into a serene retreat, balancing preservation, simplicity, and contemporary habitation.
